PILATES
Pilates is a system of corrective exercise developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates in the early 1920's. Joseph Pilates' work was developed early on through his experiences of providing rehabilitation to injured WWI soldiers, personal training to athletes, and eventually his work with injured dancers in New York City. He went on to design his own exercise equipment. The Universal Reformer, the Trapeze Table, the Spine Corrector, and the Ladder Barrel are just a few. Pilates is a full body system for everyone that helps to reconnect the mind and body for improvements in coordination, strength, mobility, motor control, efficiency, posture, and physical performance. It is unparalleled in its ability to identify and address weakness in core strength and stability. In the hands of a comprehensively trained Pilates teacher, this work can be used for the development of an exercise program unique to each client for the rehabilitation of injury and/or the optimization of physical performance.
MOVEMENT EDUCATION
Movement is essential for the experience of life. It allows us to perform our daily tasks, interact with our friends and family, and stimulates the systems of our body for optimal health. For the most part, we start out with an innate ability to move and use our bodies correctly. The process of play when we are young allows us to explore all of the boundaries of movement and helps us to remain supple and mobile. As we get older, we become more patterned in our movement through work, hobbies, and even sports. These patterns result in adaptations that change the way we move, causing accelerated wear and tear on the body, stiffness, and dysfunctional patterns that lead to pain or injury. A comprehensively trained Pilates instructor can recognize unhealthy movement patterns, identify the causing factors, and design and implement a program to reeducate the body to move correctly. Movement education is a powerful tool for every person and it is imperative to establish strong preliminary and foundational patterns to support the larger and more powerful movements we often want to participate in. The concepts that you learn will expand far into your daily life, giving you the ability to control pain, prevent adaptations, and invest in your active and unlimited future.
